De-Motivation in the Boatyard

"I feel like you've been waxing this boat for at least a month." Our neighbor stopped by to admire my work ethic / glory in my travails. "That's right, I have. The first time I used yard water and it turned the boat brown, so I had to bleach it off. Then I compounded again, only to have the hurricane yeesh it all up. Right now I'm removing 10 million specks of black paint that embedded themselves when someone over-vigorously rollered the bottom paint. I was using solvent until I melted off the vinyl pinstripe I spent 40 hours on, so now I'm picking them off the specks with my fingernail. Then I can wax again, for the third time."

My audience vanished during my narrative, but I don't care because Matt is bringing back Chinese takeout for dinner. I can taste the delicious fried fat with extra sodium and sugar! What will my fortune cookie say?

Sadly, I'm sad to tell you the sad news. It's Tuesday, and the restaurant is closed on Tuesday, just like it has been closed the 3 prior Tuesdays that we wanted Chinese food. So, I have to steal other people's motivational sayings to get me through this bleak time with no sesame chicken. Here's a few of my favorites, stolen from here, there, and everywhere.

  1. Those are brilliant quotes! Scarily true, but brilliant. Sorry that you've been trapped in boatyard hell for so long :-(

    1. The boatyard isn't all bad. We've gotten so many projects done that we are excited about. And I don't know how I will entertain myself without all the activity of the boatyard!

  3. The closest I get is probably just saying, "Murphy's Law!" and rolling my eyes in exasperation when things go wrong (and then even more wrong). But that's the second time in the last hour I've read the "it's always darkest before it turns pitch black" quote (never heard it before) and I quite like it!

  5. "For things to get better, they have to be worse first." Not sure whether this one exists. I assume it does. It sure makes sense. :-) I'm glad to read that you are making progress and I hope you are done with the boatyard work before it gets cold down there. By the way, waxing should be one of the last things you do, before you go back in the water. But, I assume you "just" figured that out... :-)
