Dinner Time Talks

We were sitting in our friend’s cockpit, eating a delicious dinner and sipping wine. Of course, as is often the case, the conversation turned to toilets. That’s right, toilets, our favorite dinner time conversation!

What kind of toilet do you have? (You landlubbers - do you ask your dinner guests what kind of toilet they have? Well, you should, and report back to me how the conversation goes. Maybe ask your work associates over lunch today. I’m waiting 😃 ). "We have a full electric on one side, and an electric conversion on the other.” A silence followed. "Our Jabsco electric has issues. We hate it. Honestly, it’s been a real piece of c.r.a.p."
“Does it, um, recycle?”
“Should we be talking about this - because if we are talking about this, and being honest, we have a sh*t from heaven problem, but I think it’s best not to mention it.”
“We had that problem too”.

It’s not just us! What!

That’s right folks, what goes out sometimes comes back in again. We’ve tried everything to fix it. This thing has all new hoses, everything should be in top condition, but it’s the bane of our existence! It’s such a blight my mother asks every week how the toilets are because apparatenly all I do is complain about the toilet! It’s not surprising though. Humans expect that when you turn the knob and flush that yesterdays pizza is gone forever. You don’t want to see it again and again, recycled and parceled out, trickling in through the supposed clean water flush.

Well, mumsie darling…….. the toilet is fixed! And guess what? Most boat fixes take months of research, thousands of dollars, ordering things from France, the part getting stuck in customs and then being delivered to Ohio, before receiving the part 2 months later and realize it’s the wrong size.

But this issue that has been plaguing, depressing and confounding us cost $0, took 0 tools and 3 seconds. The troublesome vent line that goes from bottom to top just needs to be clamped closed (should an airlock result, simply loosen the clamp). Apparently, this problem is so common that Jabsco (who I think caused this problem in order to have a good laugh at their customers expense) has a PDF all about it. No more sh*t from heaven - it’s like heaven!

  1. I am, once again, blessing the deities that caused our boat to come with a composting head! :-)

    1. Sounds like a real strain on the relationship though.... what on earth do you talk about at dinner?!

  2. Toilet talk has been a topic of conversation around here as well, but in an entirely different way. Looking at narrowboats to buy, so many of them on the market have cassette toilets (versus pump out with a holding tank that sits under the toilet). There's no way in hell I'm going that route even though I know the emptying job will fall to David. On the bright side of things, I suppose maintenance on a cassette would be a lot easier to manage.

    1. We had a portable toilet on our 21 ft boat. Yep, that was Matts job! It's ok for camping, but I stand by my comments about not wanting to see anything. I guess one can get used to anything though!

  3. Oh, savor the projects that are easy and free to fix! Such a joy, even if diagnosing the problem might have taken a while. :-) Stephanie, in RVs, they are going the cassette toilet way as well as opposed to the dumping version we used to have ten years ago. It is the European, and NZ way. In the camper we rented in NZ last year, we actually liked having the cassette toilet. Much less chance of "messing it up" than with the hose connecting system. :-)

    1. Free and easy is winning! And people love their composting toilets too. I think Hastings has it easy. Just find a spot of grass.

  4. I would love to get a composting toilet one day. I mean, who wouldn't want a giant human litter box on their boat?

    1. Ha! Seems so nasty, but there's a reason so many people have and love them, I'm sure. Too bad about the money and boat project aspect (just say NO to boat projects!)
